IN THIS LESSON
This stretch targets the muscles on the front and side of your neck, specifically the Anterior Scalene and Sternocleidomastoid (SCM). Releasing these muscles is essential for correcting forward head posture and can help alleviate tightness that contributes to headaches and jaw tension.
Instructions
Important Safety Note: This stretch involves a neck extension. Do not perform this movement if it causes any dizziness, disorientation, or nausea.
Step 1: Get into Position
Sit tall in a chair with your shoulders relaxed.
To stretch your right side, begin by gently lowering your right shoulder down and back.
Turn your head about 45 degrees to the left.
Step 2: Engage the Stretch
Place the fingertips of your left hand on your forehead.
As you exhale, gently let your head drop back diagonally, allowing the weight of your head to create a stretch.
Use your left hand to gently assist the stretch for 2-3 seconds, guiding your head back and toward your left shoulder. You should feel a stretch along the front-right side of your neck.
Step 3: Hold and Repeat
Hold the stretch for a total of 15-20 seconds while breathing comfortably.
Slowly and carefully return your head to a neutral position.
Repeat the entire sequence on the opposite side.
