IN THIS LESSON
This is the first and most gentle exercise in the McKenzie Extension Protocol, a world-renowned system for treating radiating back pain. The goal of this simple, passive position is to allow the spine to settle into extension and encourage radiating symptoms in the leg or buttock to centralize, or move back toward the source of the pain in the lower back.
Instructions
Important Safety Note: A core principle of the McKenzie Method is to work within a pain-free range. If at any point you experience a sharp increase in pain, or if your radiating symptoms (pain in the buttock or leg) worsen, stop the exercise immediately.
Step 1: Lie on Your Stomach
Begin by lying face down on a firm but comfortable surface, such as a carpeted floor or yoga mat.
Let your arms rest comfortably at your sides and turn your head to whichever side is most comfortable.
Relax completely in this position, breathing deeply into your abdomen for 5 minutes.
Modification (If symptoms increase):
If lying completely flat causes an increase in your radiating leg or buttock symptoms, place a single pillow under your hips to create a gentle, supported arch in your low back.
You may also place a pillow under your shins/ankles for comfort if needed.
Rest in this modified position for 5 minutes, or until your symptoms begin to subside.
